NieA_7 (ニアアンダーセブン Nia Andā Sebun?), also known as NieA under 7, is a 13 episode anime series about Mayuko, a poor, introverted student who lives above a Japanese bathhouse, and NieA, a freeloading, freewheeling alien who lives in her closet and eats her food. The series begins on a light comedic tone (most of the early episodes are about schemes to rejuvenate the bathhouse), and deepens somewhat as it explores the evolving relationship between Mayuko and NieA, but the overall ending is upbeat. Mayuko Chigasaki is an ordinary girl from the countryside, who now is attending university in big city Tokyo. She struggles each day to make ends meet while studying for her exams, barely scraping up the yen to afford bus fare to and from school. And at the end of the day, she comes home to a gluttonous, freeloading alien living in her closet! Ever since the aliens landed, things have been just a little weirder in Japan. Despite that, life goes on as normal for these outsiders. At least, as normal as things can be when your alien roommate builds UFOs out of junk and generally acts like none of her actions have consequences. Each day brings something new, so catch life on the outside in this boxed set!

It’s no secret that I’ve always been a huge fan of MVM’s previous releases of Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei and Texnolyze (of which the world very desperately needs a Blu-Ray release even if it doesn’t know it – hint hint), all of which have been touched in various ways by Yoshitoshi ABe, and so finally to have a release of the anime based on his manga NieA_7 (read: NieA under 7) crafted in 2000 was something to celebrate.
